Deleting a task

Learn the difference between archiving and permanently deleting a task, who can delete, and what is removed along with it.

You have two options when a task is no longer needed: archive it or delete it. Archiving is reversible. Deleting is not.

Archive instead, when in doubt

Archiving hides a task from the board and keeps all its data. To archive:

  1. Open the task.
  2. Select Archive task in the panel header.

To restore it, open the archived task and select Unarchive task. Anyone who can edit tasks on the board can archive and unarchive.

Delete a task

  1. Open the task.
  2. Select Delete task in the panel header.
  3. Confirm the prompt “Delete this task permanently?”.

The button is shown only to board admins. Members, viewers and clients don’t see it. Plugin administrators have the admin role on every board by default, so they can delete too.

What gets deleted

Deleting a task permanently removes:

  • The task itself.
  • All of its subtasks, and their subtasks in turn.
  • Its comments.
  • Its activity entries.

There is no trash and no undo. Other tasks that listed the deleted task under Blocked by keep the old task number in their list, so open those tasks and remove it.

Deleting a recurring task

If a task has a recurring schedule, deleting it also ends the schedule, because the schedule lives on that task. Copies that were already created are separate tasks and stay. See recurring tasks.

Deleting many tasks

Bulk delete is available through the REST API and needs the board admin role.
